...When it comes to the more ‘progressive’ tracks, “Mass Suggestion: Parts 1 & 2” sums up the musical prowess for which the musicianship that takes center stage, but yet that is built around the ‘song’ instead of some wild improvisation. So yeah, Cycles really does have that classic ‘120 Minutes’ sound to it, but yet many who have heard the record so far are digging it as a progressive rock record and something more than that, proving that the album has the potential to reach an audience beyond the NEARfest & ProgPower crowds (but trust me, they would make an excellent addition to both festival’s lineups); there is something for everybody here; well, let me rephrase that, there is a lot for everybody here, and when these guys come to your town and play, you’d better get up out of your seat and move to the music, well, you won’t be able to resist. Again, Ghost Circus proves that in this day and age, you don’t have to have a Mellotron, you don’t have to play your songs in 7/18, you don’t have to have an eighteen minute song, you don’t have to be a Flower Kings or Spock’s Beard clone, and you don’t have to long drawn out ethereal compositions to be coined ‘progressive.’..

...Let me start out by saying, I really like this CD. The music is part Art-Rock, part Prog-Rock all mixed with a contemporary pop sensibility. Think of a mixture of a band like Red 7, some It Bites and then a whole bunch of the later period Genesis. In fact track 3, “Trick of the Light” starts out as a dead-ringer for the Genesis song “Mama”, although the composition seems more of a tribute or homage than it is a copy. After a few spins this Cycles really grows on you in good measure because of the strong melodies that drive the songs. And it just flat-out sounds cool up loud, especially in the car...

...To my ears it sounds most like RPWL, Jadis, and Big Wreck. It’s progressively sensible in that rock-oriented way. The guitars are a combination of Dave Gilmour and Gary Chandler. The drums could be Chris Maitland or Andy Edwards. Not to mention, the singing is quite respectable for a Progressive Rock band. Additionally, they have several strong tracks and once you’ve heard it more than once, you’ll see that some themes cleverly comeback. I like “Accelerate” and “Let It Flow” and the two-part mini-epic “Mass Suggestions”, which concludes the album, is pretty cool too. My favorite song overall is probably “Trick of the Light.” While it’s not exactly “Trick of the Tail” or “Fading Lights”, it does provide a Modern Genesis vibe...

...Best of all however are the last three tracks, their total playing time being just under 20 minutes. On the single instrumental, Send & Return, the guys often show Dream Theater intensity, though there are quite many Space Rock maneuvers too. The only problem I have with this piece is that the drums are not programmed to best effect, unfortunately sounding most straightforward within those sections with the most complex arrangements. Nonetheless, Send & Return is the most progressive track on the album. My personal favorite would be the two-part mini-suite Mass Suggestion. This is a wholly original Art-Rock composition with many instrumental interludes and a really moving storyline, though on the pan-musical level parallels with Genesis's Home By the Sea are possible...

ProgRock Records has done a remarkable job bringing underground progressive rock projects such as Ghost Circus to hungry listeners yearning for new sounds. Made up of the duo of Chris Brown (vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards) and Ronald Wahle (drums, percussion, keyboards, guitars), from Tennessee and The Netherlands respectably, this is a long distance musical collaboration that really works on all fronts. Fusing elements of prog rock, AOR, and progressive metal, Ghost Circus have put together nine tracks here on Cycles that are instantly memorable, with catchy vocal harmonies from Brown, plenty of stinging guitar leads, lush keyboards, and tight rhythms. Tunes like the groove-laden title track, the Genesis inspired "Trick of the Light", the hint of Fish on "The Distance", the crunchy & complex prog-metal instrumental "Send/Return", and the two part epic "Mass Suggestion" all are highlights of this very listenable and enjoyable CD. Considering that these two musicians put this album together while both being on opposite parts of the globe is really quite impressive. Way to go guys!

... the title track kicks in next, pulsing with energy and determination, and propelling the rest of the album to a higher plane. “Trick of the Light” echoes the moodier sides of late-period Genesis, the instrumental “Send/Return” could have been in Dream Theater’s vaults, and the epic “Mass Suggestion” ebbs and flows across two lengthy parts. Pristine production and elegant packaging add to the enjoyment of Cycles. Touring this record might be virtually impossible, although both musicians have proven that distance isn't a detriment. I'm adding a half-star in the hopes that Brown and Wahle can continue to survive this long-distance relationship …
